WHY URBAN SHEPHERD WAS STARTED
As a child, I always saw the boots on my grandfather's feet, and I was fascinated by how leather acquired personality over time. As they aged, their texture seemed more and more interesting to me. Some parts of the boot were worn more than others, some were scratched by rocks or branches in the field, and the tips were toasted from the heat of the fireplace in winter.
The boots that my grandfather wore were the shoes of the working class of the ‘50s, so they were sturdy, they were work boots, the shoes of the shepherds and farmers, of masons and technicians.
During my adolescence, I found in this type of boot an element with which I identified. In the ‘80s, this footwear formed, in some way, part of the uniform of the Portuguese counterculture. The artists and bohemians, as well as some intellectuals and political activists, chose this model of traditional Portuguese boot to claim their roots and their ability to innovate society and culture.
However, in the ‘90s, the traditional leather work boots stopped being fashionable, and the mass commercialization of footwear manufactured in an industrial way practically led to the extinction of the craft workshops where they were originally manufactured.
I never liked the throwaway consumption, nor have I paid much attention to fashion and trends. I am one of those who prefers to be governed by the authenticity and quality of things.
Then I had a vision: to manufacture the boots myself, in Portugal, with artisan methods that would maintain that original appearance using genuine Portuguese leather and premium materials. The boots showed me the destiny, and together, we walked every step of the way until I turned my idea into a brand: Urban Shepherd.
HOW URBAN SHEPHERD BOOTS ARE MADE
Traditional methods go into making these boots, which are lovingly handcrafted in a Portuguese workshop that began making boots for the working class in the 1950s; this is a tradition that refuses to die, a tradition that, contrary to what is believed, has come to the modern world to share its vision and its values.
WHY URBAN SHEPHERD BOOTS ARE MADE IN PORTUGAL
Behind the cities, there are stories of men and women who built those cities, men and women who were strong and determined, with firm values and ideals...people of conviction who made their way through history. These men and women are our past, and because of that, we are also strong and determined, with a path ahead to forge. Therefore, Urban Shepherd is committed to integrating history and traditions with contemporary style.
