The Aged by Fire “patina”
Inspiration comes from stories, and this special feature is based upon a couple of them. I always admired how the original work boots aged beautifully over time. My friends and I saw them on the feet of our grandparents and their friends, marked by years of working in the fields. That’s when I realized there was something more to it than just the color of a boot. You could find these boots on the feet of shepherds and farmers, in the countryside and in the mountains of Portugal. You can still find local cobblers today that can tell you some interesting stories…
Portugal can be a very hard place during the winter. Some say that the shepherds would dry their boots by hanging them inside the fireplace. Sometimes, by accident, the boots would get slightly burned or darkened by the smoke.
We also heard from some old cobblers that the boots would get burned when the farmers would act has firefighters in order to save their fields. Portugal has always been known for its massive wild fires. There are many stories of heroic farmers fighting these fires and some of them even losing their lives in the process.
This “patina” method is a tribute to these people and their stories.
